My Top 25 Favorite Free Fonts

typography 2 Comments »

I’ve been wanting to compile this list for awhile, so here it finally is! I tried to get a wide range of sources in here so that if you like fonts as much as I do, you can spend time at every one of them. Some of these took a lot of digging for me to find, and some of them have been posted and reposted but were just too good for me to resist. And of course, more than a few are from Dafont because I couldn’t help it, I could spend all day on that site. And a bunch of them are from foundries that occasionally release free fonts that are just as good as their pay fonts (I love when they do that!)

So, enjoy! And click the photo to go to the website where you can download the font.

Balboa Park, LA

Life 6 Comments »

On the weekend I visited Balboa Park because I heard rumors of cherry blossoms…

IMG_5822.JPG

And it was true! The cherry blossoms were so pretty, and I had fun with my camera’s macro setting. I tried to get a picture with a bee in it, but the bees kept flying at me instead of holding still and so I had to run away.

And there were remote control boats in the lake! I wanted to try, but it was like a big deal and they had a whole area roped off just for the boat guys.

IMG_5808.JPG

And here are the boat guys. I like how they all have a little boat stand… you can sorta see them at this size or you can also click photo to see larger on flickr.

IMG_5809.JPG

This sign is super cute–”Ramp is for baby ducks.” And you can sorta see their little ramp right behind that sign. I guess they can’t get up the curb without it so they have to know where their ramp is. Aww.

IMG_5836.JPG

And of course, no trip to Balboa Park is complete without the obligatory cute dog photo. I think the guy said he was a husky/australian shepherd mix, soo cute. I also saw a teeny chihuahua baby that I couldn’t get a good picture of because my camera has no actual zoom, only “digital zoom” which doesn’t really zoom, it just pixellates! Hopefully sometime this year I can get a more serious camera :)

Now I want to visit the Balboa Park in San Diego, which is the famous one. But it seems like many cities in CA have their own Balboa Parks!

Huntington Beach Kite Party

Uncategorized 1 Comment »
IMG_5801.JPG

Look at my awesome shark kite! I got it at last year’s kite party. Huntington Beach is a little bit far from me, but I went to the yearly kite party last weekend anyway because it’s fun to see so many interesting kites in the air, and because I am happiest in the sun. My shark kite is the best part, but when I went into the kite store I saw…. a HOT PINK shark kite. I felt a little bit outdone, due to its obvious excess of awesome. But I didn’t buy it because mine is still awesome.

This is my boyfriend’s stunt kite. It is really hard to fly. Everytime I try, it immediately flies top-speed into the sand. But this year I started to be able to fly it for more than .5 seconds. But of course, the second I looked away and exclaimed to everyone “LOOK IT’S STILL IN THE AIR!” It immediately buried itself in the sand. But it’s still fun to try!

These are some other kites. My favorite is the octopus. Last year’s favorite was a pair of pants with a soccer ball. Before we noticed the little soccer ball, we were really confused. Also last year there was a lot of synchronized kite flying with stunt kites, which was cool to watch and seemed really hard to do.

This poor dog was chasing that ball endlessly, as two dudes (on either side of the photo) played catch and didn’t let the dog get the ball.It was fun & I should really go to the beach more often :)

All the gamers out there have probably already gotten excited about/bought/played this PS3 game awhile ago, but anyone who hasn’t yet should definitely try it. I just got my hands on a copy of this recently, and it is really fun.

IMG_5758.JPG

For me though, what makes it so fun to play is the creativity in the style and graphics. This is, of course, coming from someone who buys stuff in the grocery store almost solely on how the packaging looks, so beware! (Actually though, I’m usually right.) Anyway, the graphics in this game are so cute and handmade looking.

Plus it appeals to me because of the fact that one of the main objectives is to find and collect stickers and outfits and things like that. When you get a sticker, you can stick it on anything in the game–even your character’s own face. I accidently figured that out by stamping a picture of a shoe on my boyfriend’s character… then he started frantically searching to see if there’s a “clean my character” button, which, fortunately, there is.

IMG_5760.JPG

There’s a whole part of the game where you can actually build whole levels (type “Little big planet” into youtube to see some of the amazing levels people have made with this game, including some funny stylized versions of Mario and more) but I haven’t really played around with that enough to figure it out yet!

In the picture above, you can see my little character, dressed up like a cat with pink sunglasses. Just like my cat in real life! And you can also sorta see my boyfriend’s character, the little purple dude with the blue helmet in the corner, stamping leaves all over the house. :)

Clifton’s Cafeteria

Life 1 Comment »
IMG_5740.JPG

Last weekend I wanted to surprise my boyfriend with a trip to a restaurant called Clifton’s that I’d heard about while at work (I work at a downtown LA newspaper). So we went downtown for brunch on our way down to San Diego, and I wasn’t totally sure what to expect because the photos on their website are photoshopped a little to look pretty and antiqued, so I couldn’t really tell if it was outdoors or indoors. I did know to expect awesomeness, however. And I was right! The whole restaurant was dressed up like an outdoor woodsy scene with such detail it kind of felt like disneyland. It looks normal from outside, so once we opened the door, my boyfriend had such a surprised look on his face. The food was really good but not as good as the decor, except for the cherry pie which was really really good.

Later on, my mom mentioned that she used to go there as a kid with her mom, and they had a big treasure chest full of toys back then (basically, best thing ever if you’re 5!) but I don’t think it’s there anymore.

I love this bear.

More woodsyness.

If you’re in the downtown LA area and haven’t been there, I definitely recommend checking it out. :)
